Lantern
Longing for something more
I lift my eyes toward the fading light.
A lantern glows softly at the edge of evening
steady and patient against the dark below.
Water slips past the rocks and pebbles of the creek
bending where it must.
Giving way without surrender
never asking permission to move on.
I stand there awhile
watching both
and wondering which one has it right?
The lantern that stays,
or the water that keeps going?
Rental Store
The world is like a big rental store.
You don't really own anything.
You just keep it for a little while
then hand it back.
Love, hurt, anger, jealousy.
Joy.
They all pass through us.
Then quietly
move on.
